Description of
Ficus bengalensis:
A very large tree, with spreading branches. Bark is thick, white and
brown in color. Leaves are thick, ovate in shape 4 to 6 inch long and
broad. The leaves have 3 to 5 veins on it starting from the base. Fruit
is round having a diameter of ½ to ¾ inch. It attains red color when it
ripes. The fruit i.e. hypanthodium contains small-small flowers. The new
leaves arise in May to June and fruits whole year.

Principal Constituents:
The stembark contains ß-sitosterol, a-D-glucose and meso- inositol.
The leaves contain petunidin di-glycoside and quercentin 3-galactoside.
The fruits contain cyanidin rhamnoglycoside and polysaccharides.
Toxicology:
It has no toxic effect on human consumption
Medicinal Uses:
Various parts of the plant are considered medicinal. The
milky juice is externally applied for pains and bruises and as an
anodyne in rheumatism and lumbago. It is also used as a remedy for
toothache. The leaves are heated and applied as poultice to abscesses.
The bark is tonic, astringent and cooling. The seeds are also considered
as cooling and tonic.
